This week on Magic Tonight

Filled with Turkey and ready for more magic, we're back with two delightful comedy performers on Magic Tonight. On Thursday at the Franklin House in Streetsville, we have Jason Palter, winner of the Canadian Event Industry's "Entertainer of the Year" award and a fabulously zany performer, with no setting between high and off, who will be unleashed on our Mississauga Guests.

This Sunday at the Crimson Lounge in Toronto, we have Chris Mayhew. Chris was the co-star of Sketchy Magic earlier this spring and has presented his hilarious one-man show Mayhew Mayhem off-off Broadway in New York and also so far off-Broadway it was actually in Montreal.

Last week on Magic Tonight

We're seeing more and more response to the show in Toronto and the new shows in Mississauga and Pickering. Last week we had sleight of hand magician Phil Pivnick, mystery mind reader Ben Train and the legendary comic performer Wes Zaharuk. The photos don't quite do justice to the amount of fun we have. If you haven't had the chance to join us yet, you're truly missing out!

Seventeen Secrets eBooks

The two booklets I edited for the Sid Lorraine Hat & Rabbit Club are now available as eBooks. So if you prefer a lighter digital version, or just don't want to pay for shipping, both titles are now available for $15 each at Lybrary.com. Lybrary is the world's largest site for eBooks about magic and its related arts with hundreds of titles including reproductions of rare and out of print books.

Volume 1 includes contributions from me, James Biss, Matt DiSero, Richard Forget, Murray Hatfield, Will Houstoun, Joshua Jay, Michael Weber and Tyler Wilson. Read the full table of contents.

The print and electronic versions have identical content with a few formatting changes. The photos in the eBooks are larger and in colour. Otherwise they're the same books. They cover a range of material including cards, close-up, stage and mentalism with varying levels of difficulty.

Taller Tales

Seventeen Secrets Volume 2

I've just seen the first copies of the second volume of Seventeen Secrets. The booklet was produced by the Sid Lorraine Hat & Rabbit Club in Toronto. It was intended as a way to create something unique for our members by leveraging the talent of the amazing magicians that the club brings to the city. Editing Volume 1 was a tremendous experience. It was a collaboration with eight other people from three different countries. It was also a valuable growth experience for me as I was working with other people's material covering a wide range of fields from close up magic to stage magic to mentalism to gambling demonstrations.

The format was inspired by an earlier Toronto publication, Ibidem, which was a magazine published irregularly by P. Howard Lyons from 1955-1979. I never met Howard Lyons, so I suppose it is more accurate to say I was inspired by his legend. The cover of Seventeen Secrets was an image that reminded me of the artwork of Pat Lyons, which filled the original Ibidems inside and out. It struck me as suitably unusual for this project.

That volume was very well received and the executive asked me if I would work on another so here we are. I am even more impressed with the final product this time than I was with Volume 1. We were able to obtain more contributions (probably because the first book turned out so well). We were also able to do some rather unusual things. Chris Mayhew contributed his flourish, "Trinado" which took a huge amount of work to describe in print. Denis Behr, from Germany, contributed a card trick that comes with its own smartphone app and is so intricately constructed, I'm not even sure Denis himself knows how it works.  The only one we missed as Shane Cobalt who lectured for the club in November, but I suspect thad had something to do with our print deadlines conflicting with his wedding... next time perhaps.
