Back to the real world

After more than two years of hiding on Zoom, I’m delighted to be back in front of a live audience. This week, I’ll be appearing on The Newest Trick in the Book.

Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 8:00 PM
Royal Comedy Theatre
1051 Bloor Street West Toronto

This is a jam-packed show featuring ten magic and mystery performers to celebrate a return to face-to-face magic in the real world. Tickets are free, but must be reserved in advance.

I’ll be appearing alongside Jonah Babins, Ryan Brown, Mark Clearview, Michael Craig Francis, Chris Mayhew, Patrick Nemeth, Lukas Stark, Ben Train, Chris Westfall and The Sentimentalists.

Magic Tonight in Snapd Magazine

Photos from our show on June 28 appeared in Snap'd Magazine. I'm also told they appear in the print issue. This was our Pride weekend show, which did get a tad unusual, I must say. Their photographer, Drew Williamson, came by early so they completely missed me getting covered in sparkles and glitter (I'm told by a reliable source that those are separate things, but really, who knows?).  You can see Lukas Stark and I wearing non-matching bow-ties. For reasons that I'm unclear on, Snap'd prefers not to publish any photos of the actual event taking place, just photos of people at the event. If you want to see actual photos form the show, there are some here.

Magic Tonight continues through the summer at the Crimson Lounge in Downtown Toronto. Readers of this blog can use the code reality for a discount on the price of tickets and dinner when purchasing online.

What wonderful audiences we had at the show. Things were certainly feeling festive as the GTA got into the spirit for Pride. Sunday in particular was an extra-fabulous rendition of the show. Although it was raining through most of the day, it didn't make things any less festive. There is a bit of backstory. A few months ago, one of the servers at the Crimson Lounge where we host Magic Tonight in Toronto, fixed me with a steely glare and warned me that when Pride rolled around, i was not going to get away without some serious sparkles and glitter. Of course, you don't really have to ask me twice, but I figured I'd play hard to get just for the sport of it.

And the incredibly tall (and I suppose honorarily fabulous) Brian Roberts did a fantastic bit of classic magic-ing at the Franklin House in Mississauga.

One of the joys of hosting a show is introducing the performers that appear on it. Of course it's only joyful when you have great talent to introduce. This past week, I had a blast. Here are some excerpts from the introductions I gave:

He has no setting between high and off. [1]

Mysterious doesn't even begin to describe him.

He is the devil; pure evil wrapped in Mr. Rogers' Sweater.

His performance of the mysterious vanishing camel earned him the attention of several major governments.

See if you can guess which one belongs to each performer.
